ANOTHER PRIZE FOR HASLEMERE HOCKEY CLUB – AND THE TOWN
PRESTIGIOUS APPOINTMENT TO HOST COACHING DEVELOPMENT
(published in the Haslemere Herald April 30th 2009)
Haslemere Hockey Club (“HHCâ€) has been signally honoured by being appointed by Surrey Hockey Association to host the Junior Development Centre for under 13 and under 14 Girl’s and Boy’s hockey. The appointment recognises both the high quality of the Woolmer Hill pitch facilities and the excellent track record in developing their use through its growing junior section under the control of a HHC’s Director for Junior Hockey, Mandy Jackson, and her dedicated team of managers and coaches.
The appointment – in addition to the increased status that it gives to Haslemere hockey – will provide opportunities for Mrs Jackson’s coaches to improve further by working with Surrey’s Junior Development coaches. It will also make Woolmer Hill a priority site for hockey coach education and development programmes in the future.
Twenty years ago HHC had no juniors (of either gender) and no junior coaches. It now has (at the last count) some 350 girls and boys (aged 5-15) with a team of some 20 coaches and 20 managers. “This appointment of the Club to host a JDC is the icing on the cakeâ€, said HHC’s President, Nick Chilton. “It reflects great credit on both Mandy Jackson and Peter Smith (our Director for Playing Arrangements) who put forward the case for HHC’s selection. It is also yet another feather in the cap of our Town - whose Council is to be congratulated yet again on its consistent support of sport in Waverley, recognised a few days ago at the Sport Haslemere Sports Awards. Because of Haslemere’s position at the juncture of three counties, we hope that the appointment will also enable children from Hampshire and Sussex to enjoy the benefits of the coaching development. After all, the origin of the JDC’s is England Hockey’s “Single System – One Vision One Systemâ€!
