Haslemere Men’s teams had a number of final preseason games on an extremely warm late September Saturday.
Haslemere ended their preseason with an exciting 3-3 draw against Worthing. In the sweltering heat Haslemere got off to a positive start by taking an early lead through a great finish by Andy Powell and this was soon added to as after taking some serious pressure from Worthing, Powell finishing off a well worked short corner routine to make it 2-0.
Worthing pulled one back shortly before half time with a well worked goal and drew level early in the second half. Haslemere were determined to get back on top and created numerous chances after great play from midfielders Jacob Hall & Alfie Richards. It was Worthing however that took a surprise lead with the ever so solid centre backs of Alex Regan and Rob Dilworth unable to keep out a swift counter attack.
With time running out Haslemere piled on the pressure and we ultimately rewarded after Campbell Hancock charged forward superbly from right half to win a short corner. Step forward Charlie Millsom who slotted home nicely to draw Haslemere level.
Haslemere go into the start of the season next week off the back of a positive preseason and their first league game against local rivals Aldershot + Farnham should be a cracker.
In an effort to prepare for the upcoming season, a small round robin tournament was arranged with Leatherhead Hockey Club and Haslemere teams made up from 3s, 4s and 5s players. After a long summer off many players were well rested (some perhaps a little too well rested) and raring to get back to playing hockey – and a chance to show off the new Haslemere kits (although since Leatherhead turned up in blue the new Haslemere tops were mostly worn inside out….). Some really good games of hockey played and great to see many young players making their way up the club to hopefully make an impact at senior level this season!
