Match Report

Ladies' 1st XI 8
City of Portsmouth 2 0
Win

Haslemere 8 - City of Portsmouth 0

This week's match was a delightfully early morning start as we travelled down to Portsmouth to play their ladies' 2nd team. We had a couple of guests of honour this week, Wilson (the elder) and Hall, who kindly stepped in in the absence of Ashworth and Wells (heavy fines have been assigned to both parties for booking holidays on the same week). Knight took over as a our skipper extraordinaire, and Cracknell made sure that heavy fining still continued even in Wells’ absence.

We arrived for this game confident for a win and we weren’t disappointed. The first half got off to a slow start as we adjusted to the opposition and briefly let our pace slip down to match theirs. But after the first ten minutes we remembered what we were doing again and the first goal went in; a beautiful strike by Brownrigg that was helped in by Cracknell. After that three more goals followed in quite quick succession. There was a beautiful strike off a short corner by Wilson (Penny), and one of goals was even helped in by the opposition. By half time we were winning 4 goals to nil.

After a rousing half time talk, and a warning not to get complacent we ventured back on to the pitch with a target score of 12 nil. It started well with the first goal going in after only one minute of play. Though the opposition did get some breakaways they were quickly shut down by the defensive team, who didn’t allow Moffatt to even touch the ball for the whole game. It seemed that we would easily reach our target as 1 goal quickly turned into 4 making the score 8 nil…But alas this is where our determination petered out. Though we still had some great runs by Reed and Cross and there were some frustrating attempts in the D by Brownrigg and Wilson, the final whistle blew leaving the score at 8 nil.

Even though we didn’t achieve or target it was still an extremely enjoyable game with an excellent result and some beautiful hockey on show. Player of the match; Hannah Cross.
