Match Report
Haslemere Ladies 1st XI ‘v’ Southampton Ladies 3rd XI
Expectations were high for this critical match against the current top of the league team. Haslemere being one of only 2 teams to take points from Southampton previously would move into first place in the league if they beat Southampton.
The game started, as would be expected, at a high tempo. Possession was evenly shared between the 2 sides, with both teams being unable to convert their chances. Southampton increasingly began to pile on the pressure and the game was more and more being played in Haslemere’s half. Haslemere refused to lie down without a fight and the half time whistle blew on a score of 0-0.
The second half started as the first half finished, and Southampton continued to push forward in search of a goal. Some excellent keeping from Moffat and a stop on the line from Knight prevented Southampton from going ahead. Eventually the pressure became too much, and Southampton scored a goal from open play. Encouraged, Southampton pressed on and Haslemere soon found themselves 2-0 down.
A lesser team would have given up, but with a fire in their bellies, Haslemere picked up their game and soon chances were being created in their favour and eventually were rewarded with a well earned goal from Read. The game ended too soon for Haslemere who were unable to draw level and who now have to fight it out for second place in the league.
